Preparing for Your Radiology Visit

Different exams require different preparations. Please review the recommendations below. If you have questions, call us at 650-573-2681.

For safety reasons, small children can’t go into the room when you have an X-ray. Please do not bring small children with you to your appointment unless another adult is with you.

How to be Ready for your Radiology Visit

Barium Enema

Adult

Follow the 18-hour prep from the Fleet Prep Kit you were given.

Children

The day before the exam: a clear liquid dinner and 7.5 milliliters of Castor Oil at bedtime.

The day of the exam: Nothing to eat or drink four hours before bedtime, and ½ Bisacodyl suppository three hours before the exam.

CT Scan

Do not eat anything three hours before the exam. Clear liquids only.

IVP (Kidneys)

Follow the 18-hour prep from the Fleet Prep Kit you were given.

Mammogram

Do not wear powder, deodorant or perfume on the day of the exam. Avoid caffeine products one week before your exam.

Ultrasound – Abdomen, Gallbladder or Abdominal Aorta

Nothing to eat or drink after 10 PM the day before the exam, except for sips of water with your usual medication.

Ultrasound – Kidney (Renal)

Drink one 8-oz. glass of water 30 minutes before the exam. Do not empty your bladder until after your exam.

Ultrasound – Pelvic or Obstetrical

Drink three 8-oz. glasses of water two hours before the exam. Do not empty your bladder. You can eat.

Upper Gastrointestinal Series (Or Small Bowel)

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the day before the exam.

US Guided Core Breast Biopsy

No aspirin or ibuprofen one week before your exam. No deodorant, powder or perfume on the day of your exam.

US Guided Thyroid Biopsy

No aspirin or ibuprofen one week before your exam. No deodorant, powder or perfume on the day of your exam. Please bring all the medicines you are currently taking to your exam.
