Public Health, Policy & Planning
The Shelter Medicine program provides client-centered medical care to vulnerable residents and families in transitional housing, congregate and non-congregate shelters, hotels and motels.
Shelter Medicine aims to provide care for adult urgent and chronic medical needs, while empowering individuals to be their own advocates.
Teams for Shelter Medicine visit Safe Harbor in South San Francisco, Pacific Emergency Shelter in Redwood City and El Camino House in San Mateo, all of which are operated by Samaritan House. On the Coastside, teams visit Coast House Shelter in Half Moon Bay, which is operated by LifeMoves.
The Shelter Medicine program connects clients to San Mateo County Health’s primary care services and services from partner agencies, promotes adherence to medication and provides coordination among systems of care.
Shelter Medicine does not provide pediatric care or other services for children, except for tuberculosis (TB) testing for a child to enter a shelter.
Shelter Medicine services are available to residents at the homeless shelters operated by Samaritan House and LifeMoves in South San Francisco, Redwood City, San Mateo and Half Moon Bay.
