The mission of the Tobacco Education Coalition (TEC) is to assess local tobacco-related health needs, coordinate collaborative efforts to reduce the impact of smoking and advocate for policies that protect public health.

Description

The Tobacco Education Coalition was established in San Mateo County following the passage of Proposition 99. Over the years, TEC has supported public education, local policy changes, retail regulation and cessation outreach to reduce smoking rates.

Service Focus

Preventing youth initiation of tobacco use, promoting cessation, supporting protective clean air and smoke-free policies and reducing disparities in tobacco exposure and use.

Membership

  • Open to community members, local organizations, nonprofits, public agencies and county staff
  • Active member representation includes American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, tobacco control advocacy organizations, youth leadership groups, health departments, environmental health, school districts, law enforcement and community advocates
  • TEC encourages volunteer engagement and collaboration

Key Functions

  • Educates the public about tobacco risks and prevention
  • Advocates for smoke-free policies, tobacco retail licensing and clean air laws
  • Supports local municipalities in adopting protective ordinances
  • Coordinates cessation resources and outreach campaigns
  • Prioritizes advocacy projects based on data and community input
