Epidemiology

The primary goal of the Epidemiology team is to promote and facilitate the use of data to improve the health of San Mateo County. By identifying the root causes of and risk factors for various health conditions, Epidemiology collaborates with internal and external partners to address health inequities, allocate resources effectively, and inform policy and programmatic decision-making.

Epidemiology collects and monitors health data, participates in disease investigations, conducts data analysis, assessment, and management, and interprets and shares findings. Epidemiology also optimizes how data can be used effectively and efficiently through the development of tools, systems, and workflows for ingesting, processing, managing, and presenting data. Epidemiology provides data support and trainings to other departments and community groups.

Examples of activities:

  • Collect and manage data, such as via survey and databases
  • Conduct surveillance (monitor various data sources for health trends, patterns, and inequities)
  • Perform disease investigations (communicable and non-communicable)
  • Develop systems for processing and managing data through informatics initiatives
  • Interpret data and share findings via reports, dashboards, etc.
  • Evaluate programs, policies, and interventions
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners around data needs
