Who We Are

The San Mateo County Public Health Laboratory (SMCPHL) serves as a first line of defense against these by providing clinical diagnostic services, environmental testing, and whole-genome sequencing to identify their presence.

To amplify these efforts, the SMCPHL partners with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to further monitor and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. This strengthens the safety and well-being of our statewide, national, and global communities at-large.

How We Help

The SMCPHL supports San Mateo County residents by collaborating with clinical, veterinary and environmental partners to perform diagnostic and reference testing for infectious diseases. While the lab’s services are not directly available to the public, we accept test orders from all clinical providers throughout the county to support their patients. We also work with animal, recreational and wastewater partners to test for and safeguard against diseases.

To achieve this, our laboratory is equipped with advanced capabilities that deliver a breadth of timely and accurate results. Our Biosafety Level (BSL) 1-3 environments enhance our ability to handle high-risk, lethal airborne agents like Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Specialized testing, such as Flu subtyping, allows us to distinguish between common and highly pathogenic strains like Avian Influenza (HPAI) subtype (H5).

In addition to a robust menu of other services, including but not limited to testing for respiratory, bacterial, Rabies, STI and emerging diseases of interest like measles, SMCPHL’s staff, with over 100 years of combined experience and expertise, are ready to identify, monitor and prevent outbreaks before they happen.
