Office of the Health Officer

The Office of the Health Officer uses a population health approach to protect and advance the health of everyone in San Mateo County.

The Office supports the work and priorities of the County Health Officer. The County Health Officer is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and serves as a key public health representative in the local community responsible for at least 171 distinct duties. The Health Officer constantly monitors conditions and potential health threats throughout the community, promoting the use of local health services, advocating for public health policy initiatives with local and state policy makers, promoting disease prevention and health education, and supporting emergency preparedness efforts.

To support this work, the Office includes Epidemiology and Health Equity, Policy, and Planning teams. Identifying and addressing barriers to reaching desired health outcomes is a foundational goal for the entire Office of the Health Officer.
