Certification Basics

California EMT certification is valid statewide

  • You may apply through and be certified by only one local EMS agency (LEMSA) at a time.
  • If another LEMSA issued your current certificate, apply to San Mateo County only when the certificate is due for renewal and if you intend to change certifying entities.

San Mateo County EMS uses one online account for applications, document uploads, fee payment, application tracking and management of your certification record throughout the certification period.

Out-of-State Reciprocity Verification

To verify a California EMT certification for out-of-state reciprocity, obtain the required verification form or instructions from the state in which you intend to apply. Complete the applicant portions and follow that state’s submission instructions.

Email any verification documents that must be completed by San Mateo County EMS to EMSCertifications@smcgov.org.
