Promoting First Relationships

Overview

Promoting First Relationships

Promoting First Relationship is an evidence-based home visiting program that supports parents and their young children in building a healthy and secure relationship. Every child enters the world entirely reliant on the bonds they form with their earliest caregivers, parents or guardians. These foundational relationships shape and support a child’s growth across social, emotional, behavioral, language and cognitive development.

Program Details

Promoting First Relationships can help families to:

  • Build a healthy and secure relationship with their child
  • Understand a child’s behaviors and look at the feelings and needs behind these behaviors
  • Understand how to support a child’s social and emotional health
  • Parents will learn to understand their child’s difficult behaviors, and parents will learn to cope better with difficult times of parenting
  • Discuss strategies for coping with difficult times as a parent

During home visits, a trained public health nurse or senior community worker partners with families to:

  • Do video analysis of caregiver-child interactions, offering valuable insights into real life dynamics
  • Give positive feedback that builds your enjoyment, confidence, and connection with your child
  • Help you examine and understand  the deeper emotional feelings and needs underlying your own and your child’s behaviors
  • Encourage reflection and mindfulness, fostering a curios and thoughtful approach in parents and caregivers
  • Use handouts to share and discuss information about your child’s social and emotional health
