Program Details
During home visits, a trained public health nurse or senior community worker partners with families to:
- Record parents and children to provide insight into real-life situations
- Give positive feedback that builds parents’ enjoyment, confidence and connection with their child
- Help parents examine the deeper emotions and needs underlying their own and their child’s behaviors
- Use handouts to share and discuss information about a child’s social and emotional health
Promoting First Relationships can help families to:
- Build a healthy and secure relationship with their child
- Understand a child’s behaviors and look at the feelings and needs behind these behaviors
- Understand how to support a child’s social and emotional health
- Discuss strategies for coping with difficult times as a parent

Eligibility
The Promoting First Relationships program is available to families with a child under 5 years old, who are Medi-Cal eligible and live in San Mateo County.
