During home visits, a trained public health nurse or senior community worker partners with families to:

  • Record parents and children to provide insight into real-life situations
  • Give positive feedback that builds parents’ enjoyment, confidence and connection with their child
  • Help parents examine the deeper emotions and needs underlying their own and their child’s behaviors
  • Use handouts to share and discuss information about a child’s social and emotional health

Promoting First Relationships can help families to:

  • Build a healthy and secure relationship with their child
  • Understand a child’s behaviors and look at the feelings and needs behind these behaviors
  • Understand how to support a child’s social and emotional health
  • Discuss strategies for coping with difficult times as a parent
