Community Health Promotion Unit Hosts Substance Use Training Sessions

San Mateo County Community Health Promotion is hosting the Prevention Training Academy, a program that aims to build the capacity of local organizations to conduct substance use primary prevention work. Attendees learn what they can do to prevent substance use issues in San Mateo County communities through environmental strategies.

The Community Health Promotion Unit is providing four to five training sessions, plus one film screening per month on selected topics relevant to substance use prevention including: alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, opioids, marijuana legalization, health policies, coalition building, social media, evaluation and more.

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Prevention 101

September 19th - 9 am – 4pm
San Carlos Library, Community  Room, 2nd floor, 610 Elm St, San Carlos

Substance use disorder (SUD) prevention is founded on proven theories and frameworks to inform its methodologies, strategies, and innovations. This training discusses behavioral change theories, explains how behavioral change theories inform SUD prevention, and reviews those foundational SUD prevention theories and frameworks that promote effective prevention efforts. In addition, this training identifies key prevention strategies that can be implemented across various systems, including behavioral health, public health, and mental health.

Presenter: Paul Nolfo has over 20 years’ experience as an executive administrator and has extensive background and experience in the substance abuse prevention field.

Coalition Building 101: The Basics

September 21st - 10 am to Noon

Building and managing coalitions can be tricky and a lot of work, but when done correctly, your coalition will be key to helping achieve your policy goals. Rooted in relationship building, this training session teaches skills for recruiting new coalition members and engaging and retaining current members. We will help you assess your coalition needs as they relate to your policy goals and build a plan for engagement.

Coalition Building 102: Developing Strategies for Community Based Policy Efforts

September 21st – 1 to 3 p.m.

Adapted from the Midwest Academy, the strategy chart takes you systematically through your campaign. In this session, you will learn the ins and outs of the strategy chart and the five phases to campaign victory. We will use sample campaign scenarios to give you hands on experience with the strategy chart that you can then take and apply to future policy campaigns.

Film Screening and Discussion: Generation Found

Saturday, September 30 - 5 p.m.
Friendship Hall, 416 South Claremont Street, San Mateo

This documentary film takes an unprecedented and intimate look at how a system of treatment centers, sober high schools, alternative peer groups, and collegiate recovery programs can exist in concert to intervene early and provide a real and tested long-term alternative to the “War on Drugs.” Join us for a film screening and discussion. Recovery dance to follow! Film screening is hosted collaboratively by Voices of Recovery and Community Health Promotion Unit.
