Welcome to the San Mateo County Psychiatry Residency Training Program

Our program offers a personalized and progressive approach to psychiatry residency training that guides and nurtures each resident to his or her full professional potential.  We aim to graduate psychiatrists who excel in psychiatric knowledge and clinical skills while also pursuing two time honored San Mateo County Mental Health traditions--innovation and leadership.

Our goal is to create an academic environment that promotes both personal and professional growth.  In doing so, we feel strongly that the best approach is a humanistic one, and that we are most successful when we come together as a professional family.  We cherish our diverse backgrounds, cultures, and belief systems.  In the learning environment, we emphasize small group discussions and team-building, and in the greater community we promote a sense of social responsibility.  At the same time, we recognize that each resident follows a unique developmental path and may differ in the way he or she learns best.  Our small program allows us to tailor educational experiences for each resident.  Moreover, residents feel heard and respected in our system and are considered an integral part of our community.  Our residents are active participants in a curriculum designed by our residency director to provide the most outstanding training in both biologic and psychotherapeutic treatments from a community mental health perspective.  Some highlights include:

• Early and ongoing training in outpatient psychiatry from PGY 2 year
• Opportunity to do home visits and outreach to some of the most at risk county patients

• Flexible elective time in the fourth year for the resident to create his/her own educational experiences

Graduates of our residency program excel in a variety of career trajectories including community mental health, psychiatric specialties, private practice, academic psychiatry, and psychiatry leadership among others.
