The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working with state and local health departments and the Food and Drug Administration to investigate a meningitis outbreak of fungal infections for patients who received a steroid injection of a potentially contaminated product into the spinal area or a joint, such as a knee, shoulder or ankle. This form of meningitis is not contagious.

The voluntary recall was for New England Compounding Center products. Most fungal infections cases have been reported on the east coast, and to date, no cases have been reported in California. See CDC Meningitis Outbreaks for a listing.

Twenty three states have received the medication that may be contaminated. The Bay Area, including San Mateo County, has not received any lots of this medication. See Current State and Facility for a list of states and facilities that received medication from one of the possibly contaminated lots.
