San Mateo County Active Access Collaborative

Active Access LogoThe Active Access Initiative is a collaboration of San Mateo County, local recreation departments, and non-profit community partners. Our mission is to promote healthy physical activity in the community by offering you, the residents of San Mateo County, free and low cost (less than $5 per class) physical activities in the city where you live.

You do not need to register and can attend as many events as you choose. Our goal is to offer many free activities in each city in our County, and new activities are being added all the time, so be sure to check back on a regular basis.  Each city has its own listing of activities, including Active Zone events and community events. Active Zone events are organized and hosted by member organizations of the Active Access collaborative. They may be held weekly or scheduled by an organization or group of partnering organizations, such as "Active Access Day in the Park."

The benefits of promoting health throughout the county far exceed the costs. Creating accessible, attractive opportunities for residents to become physically active is a highly effective strategy to promote health. Active Zone sites are hosted by agencies (e.g. cities' Parks & Recreation, the County) that have goals and infrastructures to facilitate physical activities.

The Active Access Collaborative meets quarterly on the fourth Wednesday of the month.  In 2013, the meetings will be January 23, April 24, July 24 and October 23 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at locations to be determined. The Collaborative has two working subcommittees: General Audience and Older Adults.  These subcommittees meet regularly to plan specific action steps and to seek funding support for planned activities for the audiences they serve.
